Mikro-Tek’s Experience in Canadian Boreal Forest

As part of Mikro-Tek’s Technology Early Action Measures project with Industry Canada, independent third party consultants were contracted to determine whether technologies were scientifically verifiable using Kyoto Protocol guidelines. The report concluded that Mikro-Tek’s mycorrhizal inoculation technology results in average additional carbon sequestrationReduction of net emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) can be accomplished in two ways: either by reducing the rate at which CO2 is added to the atmosphere (e.g. those produced from burning fossil fuels or from clearing and burning forests), or by increasing sequestration the rate at which CO2 is removed from the atmosphere (e.g. by storing additional carbon in forests, soils and other carbon sinks). The latter can be accomplished through land management activities including re-vegetation, reforestation and afforestation as well as forest, cropland and grazing land management. Through photosynthesis plants remove carbon dioxide from the air, give off oxygen, and store the carbon as biomass. About one half of the dry weight of plant biomass is carbon, and one tonne of carbon in biomass represents 3.67 tonnes of atmospheric carbon dioxide.

of 26.6 tCO2e/ha/rotation in the Canadian boreal forest.

While many countries (including Chile) present an opportunity for planting on privately owned land, approximately 90% of reforestation in Canada takes place on Crown land by large forestry companies operating under provincial Sustainable Forest Licences (SFLs). Therefore, in Canada, any forest management activity resulting in the generation of carbon creditsThis is a generic term for any tradable certificate or permit representing the right to emit one tonne of greenhouse gas, measured in carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e). Mikro-Tek currently holds approximately 4.5 million carbon credits generated from projects in Chile, and 500,000 carbon credits generated in Canadian boreal forests.

would have to be negotiated directly with the various provincial governments as the ultimate “owners” of the trees.

Mikro-Tek has established sequestration demonstration projects with over 29 million inoculated seedlings in the Canadian boreal forest. Canadian reforestation stands mature in 45 years for Jack Pine, 90 years for Black Spruce, and 95 years for White Spruce. The technology has also been extensively demonstrated in Alberta, and the methodologies and protocols required to register offsets under Alberta’s Offset System have been developed under contract with the Alberta Government (ERA). Successful field demonstrations, carbon modeling, and Canadian-registered mycorrhizal inoculant products put Mikro-Tek in an advantageous position to rapidly initiate forest management and A/R projects in Canada, US, and internationally.
